Lino Printing

I experimented with lino printing as I have never done this before and thought that I could use the final piece in my chocolate packaging. I chose a design I liked, which was a Koi Carp, and cut into the lino block with a sharp lino tool. This is so that when ink is placed onto the block it does not go into the cut out lines so when printed an image is created.

I placed black ink on a tray and ensured I had two rollers, paper and newspaper. This was so I could use one roller to roll the ink onto the block and another to roll over the upside down block so to press it down onto the paper. The newspaper is so to make sure I don't get ink on the table.

I flipped the block upside down so that the ink side was placed on the paper. Make sure not to move it otherwise it will smear so hold it firmly and still.

I then rolled over the block with a roller pressing down the ink so the ensure I get a clear design from the ink.

I then removed the block to reveal my ink design. As you can see none of the ink has gone inside the lines so creating a clear image of my Koi Carp. Even though a blotchy effect has appeared, perhaps from the ink being uneven, this will add to the effect of the design.

To edit the colours and neaten the print up I scanned the piece in to Photoshop so I could begin changing the design.

First of all I changed the background colour using the fill tool and selecting colours that would match well with the print of a Koi Carp

Below is my final lino print design which I have edited on Photoshop. I added colour and detail so to enhance the print and make it stand out and realistic to a fish. I will use this print on my Asian chocolate packaging as a element among all the other images. I could also produce another lino print and/or create another Koi Carp by choosing different colours and emphasising the oriental theme more by using reds and golds.

Chocolate Bar Copy

This is the original chocolate bar design by Compartes which I will be copying. I found this design on Pinterest by searching for chocolate bars and have chosen to do this as i really like the zebra print with the splashes of colour.

For all the parts of the zebra I used my own photos which I took in Kenya to create it. I placed these in Photoshop so that I could begin to edit them to look like the designs on the bar.

I turned the images black and white and then changed the levels so that I had a pure black and white zebra. Which I then deleted the white as I only need the black as the background of the bar is white.

Here is the template for the design which is symmetrical so that the design will be as similar as possible to the original. I have also placed rulers on the document, so that I can align the text and images correctly.

I then went back to the zebra images and started copying segments which I would use on my piece. For instance here I am copying the face of the zebra and placed it into the document in a similar position to the original.

Here is part of the zebra pattern which features the zebras head, which is in a similar position to the original.

I continued to do this until the document was filled with a variety of zebra designs and parts.

After filling the document with parts of zebra and ensuring it was as similar as possible to the original, I chose a brush and began choosing colours to paint on the design.

Here is the bar filled with colour and zebra design, which is beginning to look very similar to the original.

I then began choosing font as similar as possible by going through Dafont and finding one that would fit in. I found both a serif and sans serif font which was extremely similar to the ones used on the original.

I used Indesign to place the fonts in the document as I find Indesign has more precision and is easier to use when placing type on documents.

When I was happy with the look of the fonts I transferred them from Indesign to Photoshop to complete the design.

Below are the fonts placed on the final document. However I still had the main title to do which I will draw by hand.

I used a spray to complete the spray paint ball effect used on the design. I experimented with the design by holding the spray can close to the page to get a bolder spray and holding it further away to get a fine spray around the blob. Which is the kind of spray I desired so did a few of these to use on my piece.

I then scanned them into Photoshop and began editing the colours to white and neatening them up so I could use it on the document.

Below is a screenshot of me placing a spray paint ball into the Photoshop document.

I then started on drawing the main title in my sketch book. I could see that this required fine precision so used a compass to create the perfect circles of the font and a ruler so to align it properly and ensure the lines were crisp and smooth.

Once I was happy with the type I had created, I scanned this in and turned it black and white and edited the levels so that it was a bold black. I placed it in the document and changed the size to one that was most similar to the original.

Here is the final design which I am very happy with!!

Pictures of Subject Matter

Below is  variety of pictures I took in Kenya when I went on safaris and visited beaches. I will be using these as my subject matter for my chocolate packaging. These pictures will be good to use for inspiration for my packaging when creating the Kenya wrapper.

Moodboards - Pinterest

I created 3 boards titled 'Asia', 'Australia' and 'Africa,  as I will be creating 3 different chocolate packaging for these countries. This was so when I come to make my packaging I can use these boards as inspiration for the design.

I then searched for elements associated with these countries. E.g. Australia - kangaroos, aborigines, boomerangs, didgeridoos, etc, and added these pictures to my boards. So that I can use these elements for inspiration when drawing my packaging. Below you can see I have searched for 'australian animals' and pinned a few animals that came up from Australia.

Here is another example of searching for elements for my board. I searched for 'Asian Culture' and pinned the elements I thought I could use as patterns and elements to be featured on my Asian chocolate packaging.

Below is my Australia mood board. I have filled it with a variety of subjects such as art, animals, boomerangs, didgeridoos, aborigines and colourful pictures.

Here is my Asia mood board and I have filled it with traditional art, architecture, geishas, lanterns, and bright red colours.

Africa is a very culture rich country therefore I pinned lots of pictures associated with the culture so to get a broad range of pictures for inspiration. Also I love Africa so researching this country was really interesting as I find the people, animals and culture fascinating
